Why does a pack of coyotes howl

A coyote may howl to bond with family, meet up with a friend or relative, or warn territorial rivals that this land is taken.

Like most other predators, coyotes hunt silently by sneaking up on their prey. Coyotes live in small family groups typically containing just two to five individuals, but use auditory illusions to make themselves sound like a large, intimidating pack. Just one mated pair might sound like a dozen or more animals!

We were fortunate that her being lured in did not amount to any harm, but I was quite amazed at the gentle expression of this coyote as she came out to stand four feet from me. We have encountered coyotes since then and have always found them to be curious, cautious and timid. I know that this is not always the case especially in urban settings. I have read newspaper reports of small dogs being snatched, but I have never felt threatened, nor have my larger dogs. That is good information to know.

We keep our bedroom windows open at night and listen intently for the coyote howls and yips before drifting to sleep thinking the house is surrounded by a pack of them, hunting domestic pets in our dune neighborhood.

I say a little prayer that all the cats and dogs are indpors and safe. But, now, knowing that that there are only two star-crossed lovers claiming their space, I will pray that they are not killed by other human idiots who think we are being attacked!

In our area I am disgusted to say, there are huge hunts killing the coyotes between January and March. Love, love , love coyotes. Have lived in Iowa, Canada , and now in Oklahoma, and coyotes have always been a part of my life. I have also seen them during the day in my yard or sometimes just walking down the street.

I do not agree with the annual Coyote hunts sponsored by a local Gun Shop. They were here before us and they will still be on this planet long after the human species self-destructs. Just wondering why coyotes always vocalize when hearing sirens? Are they mistaking the sirens as another pack? All that whooping and hollering …… sounded like a lot of fun. Just last night my wife and I enjoyed the fleeting but utterly mesmerizing coyote chorus, courtesy of the coyote family that lives near the University of Minnesota St Paul campus and the State Fair property.

From time to time, and always at night, we have had this experience. We have also seen a few, heading north, through the U of Mn agricultural fields and across our apartment parking lot to other fields beyond Larpenteur Avenue. Before moving to the apartment we had occasionally seen a lone coyote in the neighborhood but now we hear more than see and are rewarded every week or so.

At times it seems the sounds come from one direction and at other times they seem to come from many directions simultaneously. Once I thought a police siren may have prompted the event because the pitch of it and the coyotes sounded to me like both were attuned. I was born in in the pineywoods of east Texas. I listened to the Red Wolf howl as far back as i can remember until i was about 11 years old The wolves would always answer. Sometimes three packs would be close enough to hear.

There was no underbrush under the virgin pines. When the trees were cut, underbrush took over. They were open forest wolves. I spent 35 years in Alaska listing to the Gray Wolf howl.

I am not talking about the so called Red Wolves in North Carolina. Very good article- and completely factual. I help manage a acre property that is within 6 miles of a decent-sized town. Thank you for all you do and again, a great article. Thanks for your question. There is almost no danger to humans from coyotes.

Do not feed them or acclimate them to humans. They almost always avoid humans and are more afraid of you than you are of them. Domestic dogs are much more dangerous than coyotes. Enjoy the chance to view these elusive predators.

I have been hiking in areas with a significant coyote population for years and have never once had one approach me. I live in a small town in the upper part of the state of South Carolina. I was aware that coyotes live around us as I had seem some a few times on walks. My two dogs that were inside the house were barking and carrying on themselves as well.

I wondered if they were joining in the symphony! My silky terrier was just killed by a coyote. I need to know if he suffered. This happened just hours before we would be home. Please give me some peace about this. We heard coyotes last night. Thank you for caring about them and sharing your knowledge! I really enjoyed this article. I live in the Northeast and I find myself constantly attempting to educate my community about these beautiful animals.

There is so much unfounded fear around coyotes, I feel that they are so often mischaracterized and misrepresented in the local media and by community members. They continue to push a narrative of danger and fear, saying that they are going to attack their children even though there is no evidence to suggest that this is a valid fear. I try my best to provide folks with educational resources and some people are receptive but, sadly, most people what them killed just for existing and being in their neighborhoods, even when the do exactly as they should when they see people and scurry off.

I really appreciate their beauty and their wildness and I, too, have always been moved by their beautiful howls. It evokes an ancient feeling and sense of natural spirit. I was happy to come across your article to know there are others out there who appreciate these beautiful wild animals when I am, otherwise, constantly faced with and struggling against the unreasonable and unfounded rhetoric about them.

I so much agree with you. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. You should check out my propery. They kill the wildlife. Howling every evening. I hate them, they just got my small dog in my fence yard around noon time in Los Angeles!!! So, I have mixed emotions about this wild animal.

Hopefully coyotes will eat more sheep. Good article-. Ingrid Greenfield. Thanks, Lou. Fritzi Hardy Albuquerque, NM. Laura Prugh, a wildlife ecologist at the University of California, Berkeley, went to Alaska to study coyotes, the experience was "like working with a ghost species," she told the "New York Times. After that, anyone handling the traps wore gloves. The traps were carefully concealed and all visible evidence of human presence, such as footprints, brushed away.

Even so, the traps seldom snared mature coyotes, only youngsters too inexperienced to recognize a threat when they encountered it, Prugh said. Coyotes are very talkative, more so even than wolves, their closest relatives. Scientists have cataloged 11 different vocalizations. You probably won't hear coyotes at all during the daytime, when they're more likely to stay with their pack and rest, communicating quietly among themselves with whines, yips, growls and huffing noises.

As nocturnal animals, they prefer to hunt after dark, so when they're separated from other coyotes, they use their voices to stay in touch. Adult male eastern coyotes weigh 45 to 55 pounds on average some are larger , and females weigh 35 to 40 pounds.

Out west, most coyotes weigh 25 to 30 pounds. Recent genetic studies indicate that the eastern coyote is part wolf. Generally, though, behavioral differences act to prevent such cross-breeding. But apparently some wolves, probably in Quebec and southern Ontario, added their genes and helped shape the eastern coyote. They eat garbage. Some prey on domestic dogs and house cats.

Coyotes are comfortable hunting on their own—catching small rodents in newly cut hayfields, for instance—and they also cooperate with each other to take larger prey, like deer.
