Several brands are available so that you can easily check your blood oxygen saturation from the comfort of your home. Some may have special features that suit your day-to-day needs. This OTC pulse oximeter is a generic brand, but many users approve of it.
On Amazon, it has hundreds of ratings and an average of 5 stars. Shop now at Amazon. This device has a few more display options and features than other finger pulse oximeters, including:. This fingertip pulse oximeter for personal use is portable and comes in a sporty bright yellow.

Customers say it gives an accurate reading for babies. This can be especially important if your baby has sleep apnea or other conditions that may cause low blood oxygen levels. On Amazon, this product has a rating of 4. The manufacturer says the device contains a microcontroller unit, or MCU, chip that gives accurate blood oxygen levels.
MCU chips are standard components that allow pulse oximeters to work. Shop now at Metene. A very small clinical study from tested six low cost home pulse oximeters and found that two brands had devices with an error rate of less than 3 percent: the Contec CMS50DL and Beijing Choice C None of the oximeters in the study had digital or analog displays, so the study participants recorded readings manually at the time.
A major difference between the models tested in the study and the two recommended here is that the current models from both brands have displays to show you your readings. Most users find this device to be simple to use and a good value. Some users have received units with battery terminals incorrectly placed and returned or exchanged them.
According to the study mentioned above, the other low cost pulse oximeter that researchers found to be accurate was the Beijing Choice C The Beijing Choice Electronic Tech company is the manufacturer behind the ChoiceMMed brand, which currently sells other easy-to-use devices, like this one. The light shines through the tissues of your fingertip, and the sensor on the other side picks up the light that comes through.
Pulse oximeters measure how much light comes through your finger to estimate how many of your blood cells are carrying oxygen. Further, it was shown that pulse oximetry of finger probe had the lowest agreement with SaO2 [ 4 ]. However, Vax et al. Benz et al. Lindholm et al. Simon et al. In this regard, Fernandez et al. Schallom et al. Das et al. However, foot sensor can be the more appropriate one in this regard [ 7 ]. Sedaghat Yazdi et al.
Further, regardless of SaO2 amount, there was no difference between finger and toe sensor in terms of accuracy and reliability [ 27 ].
Although the accuracy of pulse oximetry is reduced in patients with severe and rapid O 2 desaturation, low blood pressure, body temperature, dyshemoglobinemia and reduced blood perfusion conditions [ 28 ], the earlobe pulse oximetry had more accurate and reliable performance regarding these changes [ 22 , 23 , 29 ].
Haynes claimed that earlobe probe can be considered as the proper method of finger pulse oximetry since in finger probe, the body movement is limited and the risk of reduced tissue perfusion is increased [ 18 ].
Thus, regarding the importance of continuous monitoring and maintaining hemodynamic stability in patients under heart surgery [ 29 ] and considering the results of our study, the earlobe probe can be used as the proper method for examining the oxygen saturation in patients under heart surgery. In this study, the environmental light could intervene with the performance of each four pulse oximetry probes.
However, a cover was put around the probes in order to prevent the intervention of environmental light with the performance of each four pulse oximetry probes. Non-random sampling was used for this study which could affect the generalizability of the findings.
Thus, it is suggested to replicate the study using random sampling in various patients. The study was conducted on the patients admitted to the intensive care unit for cardiac surgery and it is suggested to conduct the similar study on the patients admitted to emergency and operating rooms. Results of the study indicated that earlobe probe had higher accuracy in showing the SpO 2 among patients admitted to the intensive care unit for heart surgery compared to finger, toe and forehead probes and the obtained SpO 2 value of earlobe probe approximated to the SaO 2 obtained from ABG test.
Thus, earlobe probe can be used in intensive care units to measure the peripheral oxygen saturation.
